Fire Protection for Energy Storage Systems
Battery ESS fires do not behave like ordinary room fires. Detection, suppression, and layout have to be designed for thermal runaway — not office sprinklers.
Lithium-ion energy storage is showing up next to data halls, behind the meter, and on industrial sites. A cell in thermal runaway is a different fire than a wastebasket.
Why sprinklers are often the wrong first answer. Water can be part of a layered design, but it does not stop propagation the way a listed special hazard system can in the right enclosure. Runaway produces flammable off-gassing, intense heat, and reignition. The protection package has to match that.
What we look at on an ESS site.
- Battery chemistry and rack layout
- Detection that catches off-gas or heat early — including linear heat where smoke is a poor signal
- Clean agent, inert gas, or water mist matched to the room and occupancy
- Exhaust, explosion relief, and firefighter access with the AHJ
Codes are moving. NFPA 855 and local amendments are tightening. Designs that passed three years ago may not match what an AHJ wants now.
If you are adding ESS on a Florida or East Coast site, bring fire protection in before the racks land — not after. SAFE will walk the hazard with your electrical contractor and the authority having jurisdiction.
