Fluoro-K and the Novec 1230 Transition

3M has discontinued production of Novec 1230. For owners of special hazard systems, that is not a reason to panic — but it is a reason to plan.

What changed. Novec 1230 (FK-5-1-12) was a common clean agent in data halls, control rooms, and archives. The fluid itself remains listed. What ended is new manufacture from 3M. Equivalent FK-5-1-12 agents, including Kidde Fenwal Fluoro-K™, are the path forward for new systems and for recharge.

Existing systems. A Novec 1230 system does not become illegal overnight. Cylinders can still be inspected, hydrostatic tested, and — when agent is available — recharged. The risk is supply and price over the next several years, not a sudden code ban.

New designs. We specify Fluoro-K / FK-5-1-12 (or inert gas where it fits) on new work. Same clean-agent performance: fast knockdown, no residue, occupied-space listings when designed to NFPA 2001.

What owners should do now.
- Inventory agent type, cylinder dates, and enclosure integrity status.
- Confirm your service company can source FK-5-1-12 for recharge.
- Do not wait for a discharge to learn the bottle cannot be filled.
