A short field brief for owners and contractors on the East Coast. Three items matter this week.

NFPA 855 (2026) Is the ESS Rulebook Now

The 2026 edition of NFPA 855, published in late 2025, is the biggest reset in stationary energy storage fire protection since the standard was written. Hazard Mitigation Analysis is no longer a special-case document — it is the default. Large-scale fire testing sits alongside UL 9540A. Explosion control, gas detection, and ventilation are written as a system, not as add-ons.

If you are siting battery ESS next to a data hall or industrial process in Florida, bring fire protection in before the racks land. A design that passed under the 2023 edition may not match what the AHJ wants now.

Layered BESS Protection, Not One Agent

Kidde Fenwal has been showing a stacked approach: fast detection, Fluoro-K™ for the first flame, and NATURA™ IG-100 to hold an atmosphere that will not support reignition. That matches what we already tell owners. Thermal runaway is not a wastebasket fire. Clean agent, inert gas, water mist, and detection each have a job — none of them replace layout, listing, and the AHJ package.

Novec 1230 Is a Name. FK-5-1-12 Is the Fluid.

Facility managers still say “Novec.” 3M is out of that business. Equivalent FK-5-1-12, including Fluoro-K, is what we specify on new work and what we plan recharge around. Existing Novec rooms are not illegal. The risk is supply at the next discharge, not a sudden code ban. Inventory agent type, cylinder dates, and enclosure integrity now.

NFPA 2001 still governs clean agent design, install, and inspection. NICET special hazards remains the credential that belongs on the drawings.
